Man jailed for life after beating girlfriend, killing unborn son

– A 22-year-old man repeatedly stamped on his pregnant girlfriend’s belly, killing their unborn son 
– He did not want to be a father and she refused to have an abortion
– He was found guilty of child destruction and  jailed for life
Kevin Wilson, 22, was not ready for fatherhood, while his girlfriend Malorie Bantala, 22, couldn’t wait to hold her baby son. But her dream never came true. She was coming home from buying gifts and decorations for a baby shower, when Wilson and his teen friend attacked her.

The duo, both wearing motorcycle helmets, repeatedly kicked, punched and stamped on the terrified woman deliberately targeting her stomach in June last year. Family and neighbours rushed Bantala to hospital, where the stillborn baby was delivered by emergency C-section.
She was treated for severe internal bleeding and broken bones. Wilson was arrested the day after the assault, his accomplice was detained weeks later. Both denied they were at the scene of the attack, and even in court a father-to-be still refused to admit guilt over the incident.

As Miss Bantala approached her flat, Wilson and his accomplice emerged from nearby bushes where they had lain in wait disguised in crash helmets

Miss Bantala, who is still physically and mentally recovering from the attack, said in a statement: “I remember looking at him and then something clicked in my mind and I said “Oh s***, it’s Kevin”. He turned round and we made brief eye contact. I didn’t have time to think anything because by the time I knew it, I was on the floor. 
Kevin proceeded to kick my stomach, probably three or four times and then he stamped on my stomach twice. By then I had screamed “Kevin” for him to stop but he continued to kick my stomach. The moment Joel died inside me I lost everything, literally. Life as I knew it no longer made sense.”
Kevin  Wilson has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 16 years and his accomplice, aged 17, was sentenced to 10 years detention with a further four years on extended licence.

Upstate NY mountain hits -114 degrees wind chill at summit

New York City had its coldest day ever on Sunday morning, but it would have seemed like a sauna compared to the wind chill at this upstate mountain.

As temperatures dropped across the Northeast from a polar vortex blasting across the coldest air in a decade, Whiteface Mountain, near Lake Placid, hit a freezingly low -114 degrees wind chill at its summit on Saturday night heading into Sunday morning.

The Wild Center, which works with the Atmospheric Science Research Center at SUNY Albany recorded the frigid temperature from a research station at the summit of the mountain.

“The extreme temperatures last night on Whiteface have to do with its elevation, 4,865 feet and the wind speed,” Tracey Legat, the communications manager at the center told the Daily News. “The mountains of the Adirondacks are often some of the coldest places in the lower 48 states during the year.”

The arctic winds howled through the summit at about 45 mph, freezing almost everything in its path.

The center managed to capture a photo of a tree being turned into a popsicle as the winds formed a “monstrous rime ice” around it.

At -114 degrees wind chill, the mountain’s summit was colder than Antarctica’s temperatures on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

While NYC's temperatures hit the lowest its ever been in Central Park since 1916, it was still more than 100 degrees warmer than the weather at Whiteface Mountain.

Headmaster beats 13-year-old boy to death for leaving campus

Shamim Mullick, 13, was studying at the Al Islamia Mission School in the village of Majlishur, West Bengal state, India, for several years before he was beaten to death by the school’s headteacher.

The incident happened immediately after the boy sneaked out the boarding school campus to meet up with his parents, who waited for him near the facility to give him some food and stationary.

But when he returned to the hostel an infuriated headmaster beat him so hard for not asking for permission to leave, he lost his conscience.
But instead of rushing Shamim to hospital the school authorities took him to a nursing home, which is also their property. And only when the boy’s condition seriously deteriorated he was hospitalized but it was too late

The teenager’s body is carried from the hospital. His parents have made a formal complaint to police who have arrested the school’s headmaster and owner

The boy’s distraught mother said: “He was our only son. We work hard so that we can send him to school because we wanted him to get a better education. They killed my child. I want to see the offenders being hanged.”
According to local media reports, the parents were informed about their child’s death by hospital staff, while the school authorities tried to hush up the killing claiming the boy simply had fallen ill.
The incident sparked public outrage as villages staged protests and blocked roads near the school, demanding punishment for the accused. The hostel was closed, the headteacher and the school’s owner were arrested. Police launched a murder investigation.

The Nigerian man whose name was withheld, reportedly assaulted and stabbed a woman from Uganda while she was having dinner with her friends at a restaurant in Bengaluru, India on Wednesday, February 10.

According to a complaint filed by the woman Shakira, currently residing in Kukkenahalli, the Nigerian national Osas went up to her and asked her to buy him a drink.

She asked whether he knew her, and the man slapped her and pulled a knife on her before leaving.

The police have registered a case and the investigation is on, even as the woman has been admitted to a private hospital in the city.

UK band Viola Beach killed in Sweden

The four members of British indie band Viola Beach and their manager have died in a car crash in Sweden.

Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry were killed when their car plunged more than 25m (82ft) from a highway bridge into a canal.
The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday near Stockholm.
BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens said the Warrington band had toured with bigger bands and were "incredibly promising".
"We can confirm that five British nationals died in a car accident in Sweden on February 13," the Foreign Office said.
"We are in contact with local authorities and supporting the families at this very difficult time."

The band were part of the line-up for Swedish music festival Where is the Music? on Friday and were due to play a gig in Guildford in Surrey on Saturday.
The Boiler Room - the Guildford venue they were due to play - said it was "saddened and devastated" to learn of the fatal crash.
Blossoms, the band which was meant to be headlining the gig, tweeted: "Absolutely devastated for the loss of Viola Beach and Craig Tarry. Our thoughts are with their friends and families."
Viola Beach released their debut single Swings & Waterslides last year and had featured on BBC Introducing, which showcases up-and-coming music artists.
The four piece's last post on Facebook was on 2 February, when they wrote about playing a gig in the US next month.
Tributes have been pouring in for the band.
Music promoter Dave Pichilingi booked the band for the Liverpool Sound City festival last year and they were scheduled to play again this year.
They were a "hungry, energetic, amazing" band who "were on the verge of great things", he said.
BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Dave Monks, who was among the first to play their music on air, said they were "great guys" who had "so much going for them".
Lee Harman, editor of the Warrington Music website WAM who knew the band, said they were "very dedicated" and had a "real passion for what they were doing".

Swedish police said they received a call about 02:30 local time (01:30 GMT) and were on the scene within five minutes.
They said divers recovered the bodies of the victims - aged between 20 and 35 - after their Nissan Qashqai plunged through a gap in the bridge which had opened to let a boat pass underneath.
The bridge has a middle section that rises directly upwards without tilting, leaving a gap that the car drove into, the police said.
A barrier before the opening has flashing lights and warning signs, the officer handling the case said, and other drivers were waiting behind the barrier.
Inspector Martin Bergholm said: "For some reason, the car drove through the barriers and crashed down into the canal.
"The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear."
Eyewitness Jonny Alexandersson told the BBC he was waiting for the bridge to go down when he saw a car coming very fast on the left side.
"It was very tight," he said. "They passed me and in front of me was a taxi and the car smashed the side of this car and then they go in the barrier, then I don't see anything more of the car, the lights were gone."

Details scant in Virginia girl's death; police, mom to speak

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — David Eisenhauer and Natalie Keepers were promising engineering students at Virginia Tech, described by those who knew them as ambitious and focused. Nicole Madison Lovell was an energetic 13-year-old who bore emotional and physical wounds, suffering from bullying over the scars from her liver transplant. How their lives intersected in tragedy remains a mystery.
Investigators have released no details about what happened to Nicole after she climbed out her bedroom window last week, including how, when or where she was killed. Neither have they announced what connected her to a college freshman five years older, or how Keepers allegedly got involved in hiding her body.
Blacksburg police will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday, they announced in an email. Nicole's mother, Tammy Weeks, will speak to reporters then, she told an Associated Press reporter who knocked on the door of her Blacksburg apartment, a couple of blocks from the Virginia Tech campus.
Weeks shared two photos of Nicole: one when she's about 10, sticking out her tongue and wearing a shirt with an actor from the "Twilight" movies; the other showing her in a Mountain Dew hat and Dr. Pepper shirt last summer.
"She loved Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper," Weeks said sadly. She didn't give other comments or discuss the focus of the news conference.
Eisenhauer, 18, is charged with kidnapping and murdering Nicole, whose body was found by police Saturday just across the state line in Surry County, North Carolina. Keepers, 19, is charged with improper disposal of a body and accessory after the fact in the commission of a felony.
The students made their initial court appearances Monday. They said little, and their lawyers have declined to comment.
Blacksburg police said they have evidence showing Eisenhauer knew the girl before she disappeared Wednesday but have not elaborated.
"Eisenhauer used this relationship to his advantage to abduct the 13-year-old and then kill her. Keepers helped Eisenhauer dispose of Nicole's body," a police statement said.
The arrests of the two engineering majors shocked people who knew them in high school in Maryland, where they lived near each other. Neither had prior criminal records, police said.
"We had no reason to think he would be unsuccessful in his goals because he was very focused," said Principal James LeMon at Wilde Lake High School, where Eisenhauer graduated last year.
Eisenhauer, named Boys Indoor Track Performer of the Year by The Baltimore Sun last March, chose Virginia Tech to pursue engineering while competing with the Hokies' top college runners, LeMon said.
Keepers interned at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, led science experiments at her church's Bible school and hoped to build a future in aerospace or ocean engineering, her online resume said.
"It's just very, very surprising," said her principal, Marcia Leonard at Hammond High School.
Nicole was 5 years old when she survived a liver transplant, MRSA (a drug-resistant bacterial infection) and lymphoma, her mother told The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/201JsDS).
"God got her through all that, and she fought through all that, and he took her life," Weeks said.
Nicole didn't like going to school because girls called her fat and talked about her transplant scars. "It got so bad I wouldn't send her," Weeks said, but the bullying continued on social media.
Davy Draper, a close family friend, called Nicole an energetic and outspoken girl who got along with everyone.
"She was an awesome little girl. She was an angel here on Earth, and she's an angel now," Draper said Sunday.
Nicole's classmates were grieving Monday at Blacksburg Middle School, where 10 counselors were brought in to support them, Montgomery County schools spokeswoman Brenda Drake said.
Drake said privacy laws prevent her from commenting on Nicole's experience, but she said the school has anti-bullying and Internet safety programs.
On the Virginia Tech campus, state police divers searched a pond but authorities would not say what they were looking for.
Abbey Workmeister lives in the same dormitory as Eisenhauer — Ambler Johnston Hall, the co-ed residence hall where the first two people were killed in the 2007 campus massacre that left 32 dead.
"From what we've heard, he really stayed in his room a lot," Workmeister, a freshman biochemistry major from Cumberland, Maryland, said of Eisenhauer.
Logan Fry, a sophomore hospitality major from Roanoke who lives on the same floor as Eisenhauer and also ran track in high school, said Nicole's death and the arrest of a dorm neighbor was frightening.
"Like, it definitely could have been me," she said.
A number listed for Eisenhauer's parents in Columbia, Maryland, rang busy. A message left at Keepers' home in Laurel, Maryland, was not returned.

LA County authorities accidentally release murder suspect

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles County authorities say they've accidentally released an inmate awaiting trial for a gang-related murder.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said Monday that 37-year-old Steven Lawrence Wright was mistakenly released from the Inmate Reception Center on Saturday.
The sheriff's department says it became aware of Wright's release more than 24 hours later on Sunday night.
